11th ("Electric") Avenue Bars Scene
The strip of a dozen bars along 11th Avenue has long been the playground for the young,
getting the moniker "Electric Avenue" just before the Olympics when 40 bars
kept the neighbourhood alive all night.
The entertainment begins around Olympic Way (just east of Macleod Trail) with
Coyote's, one the most fun places to party during Stampede. The Avenue hits its stride at
First Street, with a couple of pubs and coffee joints. Along 1st Street, you'll find and number of establishments catering the college, university and recently graduated crowd:
including the Vicious Circle, The Soda, Bamboo Tiki Room, and The Castle Pub.
Where Eleventh his 5th Street, you'll find The Keg (with its time-tested bar), Amsterdam Rhino (with DJs Wed-Saturday), and Broken City (with and ecclectic variety of live bands),
Around 8th Street, you'll find Brewster's Pub, with its own self-brewed beers, and a block west, a new gay club, The Machine.
Today, the scene has moved a tad closer to downtown to along 10th Avenue SW,
where there is plenty of nightime parking along the railway tracks. At the corner of 4th Street is the very hip Tantra nightclub with its two levels and seductive curtains over the cozy booths.
The other hotspot here is The Whiskey, known for its over-25 beautiful people crowd, and live bands performing when they come through town.
