17th Avenue Bars Scene
The youth and alternative scene is definitely centered along 17th Avenue, gaining a new
reputation as "The Red Mile" and scene of post-hockey game celebrations.
Starting by First Street, close to that area's restaurants,
is the Tequila's nightclub,
followed quickly by Detours (a gay club). Then the area gets both more youthful
and more "alternative" with Ship & Anchor (definitely the
avenue's anchor bar), the ever-popular Mercury for the dressed-in-black crowd, and a pile of coffee places. You can also head up and down
Fourth Street.
Closer to 8th Street things move more upscale, with Melrose Place with its huge outdoor
patio and two level indoor-outoor bar, the cozy Laurier Lounge,
and The Metropolitan Grill (in Mount Royal Village) for those no longer in their 20s.
Wsest a bit further, between 10th and 11th Streets are Boston Pizza with its sports bar
and across the street the Watchman's Pub. Finally, towards 14th Street is
Morgan's Pub featuring live music most weekends and Saturday afternoon blues jams,
and the hip "no name" bar, which is just west of the McDonald's, but has no sign on the door.
