Homes: Albert Park, Forest Lawn, Penbrooke Meadows neighbourhoods

This community lies between Memorial Drive East to the north and 17th Avenue SE to the South. This area has a mix of residents and housing types. The community's roots date back to 1910. Albert Park is named for developer Albert Smyth who tried to hype the area's homes by starting a rumour of a new streetcar in (even laying down some rail ties). Public transit came to the area in the 1920s, and the area grew. Radisson Heights, nestled northwards against Memorial Drive, was developed in the mid 1960s with its curvey streets and cul-de-sacs. Forest Heights on the east side of 36th Street is a low density townhome community developed in the 1960s and 1970s.

The gently rolling landscape provides for some fine views of the City and the Rocky Mountains. Forest Lawn is the neighbourhood east of 36th Street and along 17th Avenue. The community was amalgamated into Calgary in 1961, and over the past decades has become the vibrant home to a large number of recent immigrants. Penbrooke Meadows is the neighbourhoods east of 52nd Street and is bisected by the CN Rail tracks.

This area was developed in the early 1970s with mostly single-family residential dwellings. The area southeast of the rail line consists of two mobile home parks. The announced closure of the Hub Oil Refinery o the eastern edge of the community has had a favourable impact on housing prices in the area. The west end of the community is adjacent to the Franklin LRT station.

Schools

The area is mature and is serviced by a number of schools from both boards from elementary to the high school levels. The area has 7 public elementary schools, 5 Catholic elementary schools, and four high schools,

Shopping
There is lots of shopping along 17th Avenue SE, to the south. The area has a number of supermarkets and smaller stores. Because of the community's ethnic nature, 17th Avenue here is also called "International Avenue" and the area has many ethnic specialty stores. If you're looking for shopping mall, head north to the 36th Street Shopping area north of Memorial Drive. There you'll find a few kilometres of malls and plazas extending as far as 32nd Avenue NE. This area is best known for Marlborough mall and Sunridge Mall.


Recreation
The community has a number of large park areas in the community, and is accessible to the Bow River Recreational pathways to the west. The Max Bell Arena, used for sporting and concert events, is at the west end of the community just across Barlow Trail. The community also has an outdoor pool, and indoor pool and an indoor ice arena. Movie theatres area in Marlborough Mall and several other cinemas further up 36 Street NE.

Homes
The community is mostly single family homes, with some multi-unit condominiums closer to Memorial Drive.
