Calgary neighbourhoods: Along the Elbow Valley West & Redwood Meadows
Elbow Valley is an unincorporated area in the Municipal District of Rocky View. The Elbow Valley area is located immediately west of the city of Calgary, along Highway 8 past Springbank but before you reach Bragg Creek. The area is mostly residential.
Redwood Meadows is a special independent municipality, with a population of about 1000, that lies in the middle of the Tsuu T'ina First Nation, from whom the land was leased from in the early 1970s. Redwood Meadows was founded by the offspring of Albert Warren Bragg, the founder of Bragg Creek.
Redwood Meadows has it's own volunteer emergency services and firehall, which provide fire, rescue, and first response medical services to Redwood Meadows and the surrounding Bragg Creek area.
Redwood Meadows is served by the Rockyview School District which bus K-8 students to Banded Peak School and buses grade 9-12 students to Springbank Community School. French immersion is offered at both elementary and secondary levels. Redwood Meadows also has a Montessori school. Many private schools also provide transportation from Bragg Creek.
Shopping is done in Calgary to the east, with stores most accessible either at West Hills or at Strathcona Centre, or in Bragg Creek where there is a nice shopping centre.
Facilities in the community include a developed athletic field, tennis courts, basketball court, outdoor skating rink, as well as a community building
The roughly 350 homes are built around an 18 hole championship golf course integrated into the surrounding spruce forest.
The homes here are built in the Elbow River floodplain, and in 2005 many homes were affected by serious flooding 2 metres above normal.
