The communities of Lake Bonavista, Lake Bonaventure were developed in the early 1970s during the last "boom" and are the real estate jewels in Calgary. In a city where open water is rate, developers built these two artificial lakes, built recreational facilities into them and around them, and opened these facilities up for the area's residents. The proven success of these communities in both the initial and the resale markets paved the way for other such developments, further south in Sundance and in the northwest in Arbour Lake. Access to the Deerfoot Trail from the community makes downtown and the city's airport quickly accessible.

Schools
The area is mature and has elementary and junior high schools for both school boards. High school students, though have a short commute to the nearest schools. There is a public library (shaped like a pyramid) to the east of Southcentre Mall. The LRT makes the University of Calgary, SAIT and ACAD very accessible.

The small Lake Bonavista shopping Centre provides most shopping amenities, and Macleod Trail provides a number of "category killer" big box stores to meet almost every need. The upscale Avenida Mall is on Macleod Trail, the more budget-minded Deer Valley Mall is on Bow Bottom Trail, and Southcentre, the largest mall in the area is just north of Anderson Rd.

Recreation
The area's recreation is very much focused on the two lakes (and homeowners pay recreation fees to the community association based on their proximity to the lakes). Lake Bonavista is 52 acres in size and is the largest man-made lake in Calgary. Just north of Anderson Road is the Family Leisure Centre, a fully-equipped recreational facility which also includes a wave pool. North of Anderson are two golf clubs, Willow Park and Maple Ridge. There are several cinemas along MacLeod Trail including Canyon Meadows, Southland (note: Southcentre's cinema recently closed) and the new Famous Players Coliseum just south of Fish Creek.
