This area, is the home of Calgary's "old money", was originally known as "American Hill," according to old-timer taxi drivers. Mount Royal lies on the hill directly south of downtown, providing great views of the city, the Bow and Elbow valleys. The southern portion of Mount Royal is quieter, and all areas have mature leafy trees providing shade and privacy in the summertime. Glencoe is the river valley community on the south side of the hill, and continues south into Rideau Park. These two communities are within walking distance of the prestigious Glencoe Club. On the south bank of the Elbow, and west of Elbow Drive is the community of Riverdale, with its million dollar homes on the river. Above Riverdale is the quaint community of Brittania, complete with its small shopping street and high-end grocery store.
Schools
There is a full range of public schools from the elementary through high school levels in and close to these communities.
Shopping
17th Avenue provides a bevy of boutiques for high-end shoppers, though many prefer to shop downtown at TD Square and Banker's Hall during business hours, and the more practical-minded head south a bit to the larger Chinook Centre shopping mall. There are two Safeway stores close-by, one on 4th Street at Elbow, and one on 8th Street at 11th Avenue.
Recreation
The area has lots of parks and recreational venues, including the Community Association-run tennis courts in Mount Royal and in Elbow Park, and of course the venerable Glencoe Club (private). The Elbow River pathways are accessible from several spots, with the renowned Lindsay Parks Sports Centre. Public outdoor pools are nearby at either Stanley Park across the Elbow River off Elbow Drive, or South Calgary on 14 Street SW. 4th Street has plenty of restaurants and bars, being Calgary's Restaurant Row. Of course, the popular Arts Centre is just inside the downtown on 8th Avenue at Macleod Trail. For movies, head into downtown for a choice of 6 theatres.
Homes
The community is mostly single family executive homes, with some multi-unit condominiums btweem 5 St and 2nd Street SW in the east, and between Royal Avenue and 17th Avenue in the north part of the community, as well as along 14th Street in the west. Most streets are quite peaceful except for Elbow Drive, Sifton Blvd and 14th Street.
