Sports: Calgary's Competitive Sports scene
Calgary has some great opportunities to watch somebody ELSE sweat it out, with some top-level competitive athletes.
Calgary Stampeders (NW)
This is Calgary’s team in the Canadian Football League. The team plays at McMahon Stadium ("MICK-man"), with a season running from June until October, plus the play-offs. An exciting way to spend a summer evening with friends. 289-0205.
Calgary Flames Hockey (SW)
 Calgary’s team in the National Hockey League has won the Stanley Cup, and been a contender for many years. The season runs from September until April, plus playoffs. You could get tickets for seats all around the rink (its no longer just the "nosebleeds"). 777-2177.

Calgary Hitmen (SE)
This Western Hockey League team is named for Brett "the Hitman" Hart, a WWF wrestler and the team's owner. The regular season runs from September until February, and is a reasonable-priced way for the family to watch live hockey. 571-2200.

University of Calgary Dinosaurs (NE)
The University of Calgary fields several top national teams, all called the "Dinosaurs". The teams are all top grade, winning national championships and providing players for many national and Olympic teams. The swimming team is best in the country, and has included dozens of world and Olympic record holders. 220-DINO (3466).
Race City Motorsport Park (SE)
This motor park, on the southeast fringe of town, second in action only to Toronto's Mosport Park. From April until October, weekly races and drag races thrill car enthusiasts. 272-7223.
Glenmore Reservoir (Rowing & Canoeing) (SW)
The Boathouse in Glenmore Park North is home to the Calgary Rowing Club and the Calgary Canoe Club and hosted to boating events of the 1986 Western Canada Games. Boating season begins as soon as most of the ice melts, and regattas are held late in the summer. This facility also hosts the Dragonboat races at the end of July. 246-5757
Calgary Rugby Club (SE)
Calgary’s six rugby teams play at 9025 Sheppard Rd SE. The new number is 255-9199.
Stampede Raceway (Macleod)
Catch thoroughbred horse racing season runs from April to June, with a break for the Calgary Stampede. Harness racing runs from mid-July to October. The upstairs dining room provides shelter and a great view of the track. Of course, betting makes the races more "interesting". 261-0214.
Spruce Meadows (south of town)
Just south of Calgary, off the Marquis of Lorne Trail (Highway 22X), is this world-class facility. Some of the top-prize events (millions of dollars) in the equestrian world, including show jumping are held each summer. 974-4200.
