Waiparous is in the middle of the Rocky Mountains Forest Preserve, which extends south to the US border. West of the town are numerous provincial campgrounds along the Forestry Trunk Road, highway 40/940 which continues northward to Grand Prairie.
The area is popular with 4-wheel-drivers, campers, and even has a paintball range.
Recent police enforcement has made the area more appropriate for peaceful
enjoyment of nature, rather than rowdy partying and off-road driving.

Ghost Lake Dam
30 km NW of Cochrane
This dam on the Bow River, just east of where the Bow is joined by the Ghost,
is popular with Calgary area windsurfers. The lake is deep (its also used for
scuba dive training) and is cold year round (always wear a wetsuit!), but is
best known for its strong and steady winds from the west.
