[ Other Neighbourhoods ]

Trans-Canada highway (16th Ave) through Montogmery

These communities straddle the Bow River floodplain and Bowness Road, west of Shaganappi Trail. Montgomery is on the north bank of the Bow River, nestled between market mall and the large Shouldice Park. This area evolved into a working class community with mostly 1940s-era small, owner-built houses. Bowness lies on the south bank of the Bow River Valley, north of the Trans-Canada Highway (#1). Bowness was developed after a 1911 donation of Bowness Park and a three-span steel bridge to the City (now a designated historical site), after which the City extended street car service to the area. Most of the development in Bowness did not occur until the 1940s. The area is mostly single family homes, though there are some low-rise apartments along Bowness Road. The west end of Bowness is home to the Greenwood Village Mobile home Park.

Schools

The area has five elementary schools and a high school in the public school board.

Bowness Park has well-treed greenspace and picnic grounds, with several shallow lagoons used for paddleboats in summer and ice skating in winter. Above Bowness is the jewel of Calgary's sports scene, Canada Olympic Park, with its bobsled, luge, ski jump, ski and snowboard hill, and the Canada Olympic Hall of Fame Museum.
